History of Weston Angling Club

We are Runcorn’s oldest angling club established in 1949, by the late Jimmy Critchley and Arthur Dickinson,

known then as ICI Weston Club Angling Section.

We remained part of the ICI recreation club for 45 years until the recreation club was sold in 1994.

At this time the angling section decided to go private, the name was changed to Weston Angling Club Runcorn and the club set about raising funds so that Sandymoor Pool could be bought outright.

I am trying to piece together the History of our club and would like to hear from you.

If you have any history, pictures or anything you think would be of interest.

If you Could put it down in writing and please either E-mail it to me or hand it to any club officials.

Many Thanks in Advance

Our first slideshow is of the construction of the lake from a mere field to the beginning of how she looks today

Mr Alan Coste sent in the pictures of the excavation of Sandymoor, taken in the early 1970’s.

Kevin Pickering and George Fryer supplied the pictures of the founder members.

The old wooden bridge had been set on fire and the timbers found to be rotting.

So to make it safe a new metal bridge was commissioned and built by Edwards Engineering (Jeff and Alan)

with a great deal of help from Jimmy Gaynor, Jimmy Hackney, Joe Shaw.

Work began on 2nd July 2010 and took nine days to complete, the bridge spans 94 feet and is 1 metre wide.

On completion of the bridge the owner of Edwards Engineering (Les) made a plague and the bridge was dedicated to the late Mrs Janet Hardiman long standing Social Secretary and named “Janet’s Way”.

Below are pictures from the re-construction of the bridge as we see it today
